Ponta de São Lourenço
PR8 is one of Madeira’s most iconic hikes, taking you across a rugged volcanic peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. This is the easternmost point on the island. Unlike the island’s lush forests this trail offers dramatic cliffs, colorful volcanic landscapes, and endless ocean views from start to finish.
I got some of my favorite photos I've ever taken on this hike, and when I think back on Madeira, this is the place I remember most. To this day, it still stands as my favorite hike I've ever done.
TRAIL DETAILS
From the moment you leave the parking area, the landscape feels completely different from anywhere else on the island. The trail winds across Madeira's easternmost peninsula with panoramic ocean views on both sides, rolling volcanic hills, and rugged cliffs around every corner.
Although the hike is considered moderate because of the constant ups and downs, the path is well maintained and suitable for most hikers with a reasonable fitness level. Every climb rewards you with another breathtaking viewpoint, making the effort completely worth it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
About halfway through the hike you'll reach Casa do Sardinha, a small café and visitor area surrounded by palm trees that feels like an oasis in the middle of the rugged peninsula. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee, cold drink, snack, or use the restroom before going on. The cafe is one of the only shaded spots on the trail and offers incredible views of the surrounding cliffs and ocean.
Many hikers stop here thinking this is the end of the hike but the best views are ahead. Keep hiking to Miradouro Ponta do Furado.
CASA DO SARDINHA CAFÉ
Most people think the hike ends at Casa do Sardinha, but the real reward is the extra climb beyond the café.
After leaving Casa do Sardinha, the trail climbs steeply toward Miradouro Ponta do Furado (Pico do Furado). the highest and most spectacular viewpoint on the peninsula. This final push is short but definitely the most challenging part of the hike. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the jagged coastline, offshore islands, and endless Atlantic Ocean stretching in every direction.
You'll also see a sign near the end that discourages hikers from continuing farther. Many visitors stop there, but the viewpoint itself is what most photographers and hikers consider the true finish line of PR8.

A Walk Through Madeira’s Mystical Forest
If there’s one place in Madeira that feels like you’ve stepped into anther world, it’s Fanal Forest.
Hidden high in the mountains, this ancient laurel forest is unlike anywhere else on the island. Twisted trees covered in moss, rolling green hills, and the famous blanket of fog create an atmosphere that feels straight out of a fairytale.
It’s peaceful, quiet, and one of those places that makes you want to slow down and simply take it all in.
Why Fanal Forest is Special
My Two Completely Different Experiences
Everyone dreams of seeing the famous mist, but Madeira's weather changes incredibly fast. Even if you arrive under blue skies, clouds can roll in within minutes—and if they don't, the ancient trees are still worth experiencing.
I experienced Fanal Forest in two completely different ways. The first time, the sun was shining, the hills were bright green, and wild cows wandered peacefully beneath the ancient laurel trees. A few days later, I returned to find the forest covered in a thick layer of fog. It was hard to believe I was standing in the same place. The mist gave the forest an eerie, magical atmosphere that felt like stepping into another world.
If you have the time, I'd recommend visiting twice—you'll walk away feeling like you've discovered two completely different destinations. Take your time here to enjoy the incredible viewpoints and make friends with the roaming cows.
